Styles - Fonts and Text

The fonts and text tab of the style editor allows you to set the various text options available in rendering your chord and scale images.

For each item you can choose a font family from the drop-down list, for example: Arial, Times New Roman etc... Next this this is the font point size, and then options for bold and italic text styles. The following example shows the various text items in a rendered image.

Chord Title Font

This is the name of the chord or scale, in the above example - Dmin 7.

Flats and Sharps Font Size

When sharp and flat symbols are used in chord or scale names, the font size for those symbols will be set to the same size as the title font. If you uncheck the option "Use title size", you can then go and enter a font size for the symbols only. This may be useful if your title font is unusual, or if you are using the "scale" feature in the General Settings tab.

The Y-adjustment field allows you to enter a value that will move the sharp or flat symbols up and down. This gives you fine control over the vertical positioning of these symbols. Note that to move the symbol upwards, you need to enter a negative value. Likewise a positive value will move the symbol down the screen. Measurements are made in pixels, so typically quite small values will be needed.

FrettyCharts will assign a default value which usually works well, which is half the point size of the font in the upwards direction.

Open / Mute String Font

This font describes the text used to show O and X symbols for open and muted strings. In the above example, the bass string is muted and marked with an X.

Fingering Text Font

This is the font size that appears inside the fretted circles on the guitar neck. In the above example, the numbers show suggest left-hand fingering. It is recommended to use sans-serif fonts for this text, as space is usually at a premium and less detail is better. Fonts such as Arial and Verdana are ideal.

Fret Markers Text Font

This is the text that provides fret information underneath the title in the above example. Here is shows the position of the 5th fret. It is best to keep this quite small and make sure the text stays inside the fret lines.

String Markers Text Font

This is the text at the end of each string which shows the note values in the above example: D, A, F, C, D.
